Movie Quotes – Day 358
Mother: Randy? What’s wrong? Whatcha cryin’ for?
Randy: Daddy’s gonna kill Ralphie!
Mother: No he’s not…
Randy: Yes he is!
Mother: No, I promise, Daddy is not going to kill Ralphie!
I love my children, I really do. I’m just saying that it’s a good thing they’re so cute. One bad thing about living in Louisville in the winter is that it’s considered child neglect to tell them to go outside and play in the mud, where even in the depths of a North Dakota winter, it’s completely acceptable to tell the little apes to go outside and play in the snow for a few hours while dear old Dad figures out how to get that vein in his forehead to stop throbbing.

Saying Goodbye
In 2001, I met a beautiful woman. We went out to dinner for our first date, and by the time we said good night, I knew that she wanted a yellow lab to go with her new house. As we began dating, she found a reputable breeder and put down a deposit on a puppy. She even made the road trip to the wilds of central Kentucky to pick out her puppy a few days after the litter was born. She picked out a tiny, little white Lab puppy who snuggled up in her arms when picked up.
A couple months later, we packed Girlie Bear and Little Bear and drove out to get the puppy. I was glad that I only brought enough to pay for the pup Irish Woman had already selected, because there is no better marketing than a playpen full of Labrador puppies and two kids under the age of five. We brought Bluegrass home that day.
She was fuzzy, and friendly, and photogenic.
She was curious about the world around her.
But, she didn’t stay a fuzzy pup for long. She grew….
and was an excellent watch dog.
For a water dog, she wasn’t very impressed with the lake, but she got into it after a while.
Eventually, she started to show her age, and enjoyed a lot of nights relaxing in front of the fire, with her big brother…
and little.
We had to let go of Blue yesterday. She’d been struggling to get up and down for a long time, and it was becoming very plain that she was never really comfortable. She developed a hard, hacking cough on Saturday night, and the vet told us that it was either pneumonia or tumors in her lungs. We said our goodbyes, then I held her while the doctor ended her pain.
Bluegrass was a sweet, playful, loving, and fun part of our family. Irish Woman commented last night on how quiet the house was without her snoring or her trips around the house to check that all the doors were closed and that all the kids were in their beds. We will miss her.

Movie Quotes – Day 357
A man’s GOT to know his limitations. — Magnum Force
You have to know what is possible, what is feasible, and what is likely. Yes, we should always try to do better in everything we do, but we have to be realistic about what we’re capable of accomplishing.

Movie Quotes – Day 356
Fine! Then go ahead and *starve!* If she doesn’t eat with me, then she doesn’t eat at all! — Beauty and the Beast
I’ve never said that I’m an easy man to live with. To be honest, the fact that Irish Woman hasn’t kicked me to the curb over the past decade and a half in general, and in the last week or two in particular, is just a sign of her strength and forgiving nature. I go from grumpy, to growly, to downright outrageous, and for the most part, she keeps her calm, sweet demeanor. Occasionally she bites me in the ass, reminds me of who I am and, more importantly, who she is, and things get back to as close to normal as they get in our house.

Musings
- DaddyBear is not allowed to bring a belt fed rifle to the .22 match.
- It only took two shots to snuff out a candle at 8 yards, but 20 shots to neutralize life-size targets of a skunk and rabbit.
- Thoughts on using a rifle for self-defense should include knowing where to aim at a 5 yard target if you followed your training and zeroed it for 100 yards or more.
- I got to try a .30-30 lever-action rifle after the match yesterday. I now have a new entry on my list of things to own.
- There are few things better for lunch after a cold morning than a bowl of hot chili and a grilled cheese sandwich.
- Fire in the fireplace, cranberry bread out of the oven, banana bread in the oven, hot toddy in hand, and watching football with my youngest son. Life is good.
