I can think.
I can talk.
This morning I woke up above ground.
You know what? Everything else is just gravy.

In honor of the University of Kentucky Wildcats basketball team, and especially their fans who are apparently setting anything they can find alight.
Yeah, I don’t expect to be able to do anything productive for about five days. How’s your week going?

Well, Blogger seems to have borked up something in my bloglist. I can’t add, edit, or remove anything from the list. I’m going to try to get the links to the blogs out and re-make it, but if I miss someone, please let me know. Also, if you read this little collection of brain droppings and can stand to have your good name associated with it and I haven’t blogrolled you yet, just drop me a note and I’ll add you to the new list.

After the last post, I’ve had this little ditty running through my head.

Over the past few years, ladies have begun to take their rightful place alongside men on the firing line. Whether it be for self-defense, shooting sports, hunting, or just having fun, the ‘boys club’ has opened up. Through efforts of women in the blogosphere and shooting sports, young girls have more opportunities to learn to enjoy shooting for all of these reasons and more.
June 9, 2012 will be National Take Your Daughter To The Range Day. This is a day where the importance of introducing our daughters to our sport is highlighted. This emphasis is important because when a girl is shown that guns and shooting are a fun pastime, they are more likely to keep at it into adulthood. More importantly, they learn that the stereotypes of shooters, especially female shooters, are hollow. Let’s face it, boys are half expected to be interested in guns, and when a girl expresses an interest, she risks being labelled as strange by members of society that still cling to old stereotypes. As adults raising young women, we owe it to them to teach them that being responsible for themselves and enjoying a fun hobby is as normal for them as it is for their brother.
A girl can and and should be encouraged to shoot as well as or better than her brothers, and the first step is to get her to the range with someone she trusts so that she can get over the initial nervousness and start to enjoy herself.
But teaching your daughter to shoot and helping her to enjoy her time at the range has an even more important objective. I can sum it up by quoting from William Ross Wallace:
For the hand that rocks the cradle
Is the hand that rules the world.
Our daughters are going to be mothers someday, and they will have an extraordinary amount of influence on the generations that will follow them. If mom is a shooter, or is at least comfortable with guns, then her kids and grandkids are more likely to be exposed to the shooting sports. If she believes that guns are dangerous and to be avoided, then the chances of her children learning how to safely use them and continue the tradition of gun ownership that our country enjoys are greatly reduced.
We’ve made a lot of progress in the past few years when it comes to gun rights, but the pendulum will eventually swing back the other way. Only by laying a foundation of young men and women who enjoy and understand the fun and responsibility of gun ownership can we hope to slow down and stop the inevitable shift away from our current success. Even with all of the progress we’ve made in integrating women into the sport, society still accepts little boys playing with toy guns while pigeon-holing little girls into the playroom with the dollhouse. My goal as a father is to teach my daughter that she can be feminine and still shoot out the X ring. This day gives us an opportunity to take our daughter to the range and continue that work.
I will be taking Girlie Bear shooting on June 9, and I encourage all of you to take your daughters, granddaughters, nieces, or whatever young girl is special in your life to the range. It will be good for her, and it will help to preserve our rights in the future.

Washington D.C. – (DBI) President Obama called an emergency joint session of Congress today to report on something he had found in the White House that will have shocking ramifications for the United States.
“Last night, as I was preparing for bed, I found this in the sock drawer of the extra dresser in the Lincoln Bedroom.”, said the President as he waved around a sheet of yellowed paper.
“It’s an old document that lists out how our government is supposed to work, and if you can believe it, lists out several things that our government is prohibited from doing, like establishing a religion or forcing someone to testify against himself. Most worrisome, it limits how much we can push the American people to do in their private lives, including not doing anything about that worrisome American habit of wanting to own and carry around guns.”
Analysis of pictures taken at the event indicate that the President had found an old copy of the United States Constitution, a mostly forgotten document written during the early years of the nation. While some people in the United States hold to it as a ‘founding’ document for the United States, the majority of people who matter in the country, mostly found on either coast, had forgotten about its existence.
“What fools we’ve been!” opined Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, flanked by Minority Leader McConnell and Speaker of the House John Boehner, “This actually says that if something isn’t given to the federal government as a power, then it can’t do that! How are we supposed to continue paying people to not work and interfere with people doing things that we don’t like like making money and deciding about their health care and what they do with their own reproductive organs?”
After a quick bi-partisan conference where the document was read aloud to congressional leadership, many members of congress took the rostrum to express shock at the document’s contents.
“Really? We have the power to declare war, and the President isn’t supposed to do anything like that without getting our OK? But what about all of those if-we-don’t-do-something-we’ll-lose-the-interest-of-the-masses wars we’ve been launching?” said Nancy Pelosi, Democrat of California.
Congressional leadership immediately began drafting legislation to scale the federal government back to its level of involvement in the country as it stood sometime in 1903, the last time anyone remembered that document being brought out when leaders where trying to decide the direction of the country.
Governors across the country received telephone calls from Mr. Obama, explaining the document and how it meant that the states would be given a lot more responsibility for themselves, but also that they would not have Washington pushing them in one direction or another anymore. The governors of Texas, Arizona, and Montana are all reported to have shrugged and gotten on with business, while those of Massachusetts, California, New York, and Illinois are under suicide watch at this time.

To improve is to change, so to be perfect is to have changed often. — Winston Churchill, “His complete speeches, 1897-1963”
My Take – Our opinions, our beliefs, our knowledge must always be changing and growing. When we refuse to listen and learn, we no longer have the ability to find solutions.

In honor of Earth Hour, I’ve got a bunch of lights on, the TV and computers running, and the air conditioning is on.
As an added bonus, I made plans with the neighbor tonight to cut down a big honeysuckle bush that sits on the property line using a chain saw with a two-stroke motor. Nothing like that wonderful blue smoke. This was after I mowed the lawn with my dirty old powermower, which according to my enviro-hippie barista, kills little baby birds every time the engine fires.
What are you all doing to make a difference?

For Saturday morning cartoons today, we watched “The Princess Bride”. Boo loved swashing some buckle. And yes, I’ve sung this song to a girl, long ago and far away.
