Blast from the past. Happy Talk Like a Pirate Day, ye scurvy bilge rats!
A couple of Fridays ago was “System Administrator Appreciation Day“. This is the day where we all stop to remember those people, myself included, who act as the mechanics for the technology that we all use every day. Be it the Linux SysAd, the Windows desktop administrator, the Oracle DBA, the Cisco network admin, or the cellular communications guy, we all work bad hours in dirty computer rooms and worse to keep the information super highway rolling.
On September 19, it will be “Talk Like A Pirate Day“. This is the day where we all get to put on our eyepatch, raise the Jolly Roger, and swagger our way through the day while shouting out our doggerel to the masses.
It occurred to us at the office today that we could mix the two and celebrate “Talk Like a Pirate SysAd Day”. Here’s some thoughts on…

- Would anyone be interested in a series of blog posts that discuss the weapons and such of the characters? I tried really hard to not get into the nerdy details in the book, but the nerd in me is screaming to be heard.
- The experience of reading something you’ve written and deciding that it’s too convoluted and shaky is probably the same feeling a knitter gets when he notices that he’s dropped a stitch and has to rip out two or three rows to fix it.

Musings
- My day mostly amounted to me calling people and saying “You remember that thing you wanted me to do two months ago? Do you still want me to do it?”
- On my drive home tonight, I heard and saw what I thought must be a bunch of police cars either escorting a hurt child or a fallen officer to the hospital, but instead it was a police escort for a University of Louisville sports team.
- I do not now, nor will I ever, understand. I just have to accept that.
- Well, the final read-through of the hard copy of Via Serica is done and the edited file has been uploaded to the printer. Hopefully it’ll be ready for sale by tomorrow.
- It is amazing how much more you find when you hold a dead-tree book in your hands. I’m going to have to add the expense of getting a copy of any future books printed before releasing for sale.
- I’m going to be doing the Mister Mom thing again next week, but I will not be able to take the week off. We shall see how this goes.
- There is an odd sense of satisfaction that comes from watching a literal ton of old equipment roll onto the back of the truck that is taking to that great recycler in the sky.
- Boo is learning that if he doesn’t want to get out of bed when I flip on the light and try to gently wake him, I have no problem in releasing the hounds and letting them kiss him awake.
- It is good to know that, should our alarm clocks ever cease to function, Derby will awaken us all at 6:15 every morning as she warns the kindergartener down the street and her father that they are forbidden to walk in her yard. She gives these warnings at full throat, usually with her nose pressed tightly against the glass of my front windows.

Musings
- Boo had his first cross country meet on Friday. He did well, and thought it was cool that all the older kids cheered for him and his age group, so he cheered for all of them while they ran.
- Note to self – Bring snacks to the cross country meets. Boo gets very hungry after running, apparently, and the hot dog and hamburger vendors are hunting over bait.
- Girlie Bear retook the ACT on Saturday. She says she feels better about it than she did on her first attempt. At least, she says she could remember the science section.
- Girlie Bear got her acceptance letter from her university today. I think it finally hit her that this is all happening.
- Speaking of which, she is going down to the university on Saturday with her JROTC’s Raider group. She isn’t participating, but her instructor wants to introduce her to the ROTC program there. I’m keeping my fingers crossed on this one.
- I asked Girlie Bear to get the name of a good cleaner for her ACU’s so that she didn’t go down there looking like Joe Shit the RagMan. Apparently, she used that phrase when talking with her JROTC instructor, and he said he’d never met someone so young that knew that phrase. Yep, that’s me, a good influence on impressionable youth.
- BTW, how in the name of Goo do you make tan suede jungle boots look good?
- Your opinion of humanity takes a serious dip when you spend a few hours on a Saturday night cleaning up garbage during and after a big community event.
- Work on Battle Buddies is going steadily. One good thing about writing a book of short stories is that when you get stuck on one, you can either start working on another story or go back and make something you’ve already done better.

Helping Out One of Our Own
If you’ve been around the blogs for a while, you probably know TinCan Assassin over at Nine Pound Sledge. Over the past couple of years, he and his wife have struggled to keep their family together, and a lot of us know what that’s like. After a lot of work on both their parts and a lot of prayers and good thoughts from friends and family, they’re going to try to put their family back together, but they could use a little help.
He’s in Missouri, and his wife and child are in Ohio. They’ve put up a GoFundMe site to try to raise the money he needs to move to Ohio and rejoin his family. Anything you all can spare to help a brother out will go toward bringing his family back together.
But I’m going to sweeten the deal.
Everyone who contributes to the campaign and emails me a copy of their receipt at daddybear@daddybearsden.com will go into a drawing for some “fabulous” prizes.
When the campaign hits the goal of $2000 or on October 14, whichever comes first, I’ll draw three names.
