Merry Something!
My wife has a rather twisted sense of humor.
It’s what kept us together and off of the news for so many years.

Marking the Passing of a Good Man
David Drake has passed away, and we are lessened by his absence.
I’ll leave the heart-felt remembrances of his life to those who knew him personally. I only ever met Mr. Drake once. He was doing a reading and question&answer of his newest book at LibertyCon. The session, which was scheduled for one hour, stretched out to almost twice that. He took the time to not only give thoughtful, sometimes humorous answers to all comers after his reading, but also stayed long to speak with everyone who came up to the table afterward to shake his hand and talk with him.
I’m glad that I took the opportunity to meet him, because his easy-going and charming manner made the almost 30 years of being a fan of his work melt away. For just a moment, I was talking to one of my heroes.
I thanked him for Redliners and for all of the help that book gave me when I was going through one of the darkest times in my life. I was careful to not take too much time from someone who had so many who wanted to talk with him, but the moment I did get will stay with me forever.
I started reading Hammer’s Slammers as a young private when one of the covers caught my eye at the AAFES book store in Augsburg. My first sergeant caught me reading it during CQ duty that weekend, and he gave me two more the next morning. I worked my way through his catalog in the intervening years. There was usually a David Drake novel right next to something from Heinlein in my rucksack no matter where I was going.
Drake was a true gentleman in a time when such men have become rare. Through his work, multitudes have been inspired, instructed, and entertained. In an age where concepts like brotherhood, honor, and duty are either deified or vilified, he portrayed them in the same way he lived them, with honesty and clarity.
Godspeed, David Drake. We will mourn you until we join you. Keep a space open around the campfire for us. I want to hear more of your stories the next time we meet.

Rumblings
Twice this week, the Boy Child, the Young Prince, the Last Scion of His Mother’s House, has almost missed the school bus because he was too engrossed in electronic frippery to feel the ticking of the clock.
So, being a good father, I took away the primary electronic distraction, along with the pair of headphones he was losing himself in.
The next day, he was using another set of headphones and the miniature electronic distraction to wile away the minutes between rising from slumber and clambering aboard the educational conveyance.
Needless to say, I was rather…. irked. Irritated, you might say.
Using The Voice, I demanded surrender of the headphones, the stowage of the phone, and declared that henceforth, it is forbidden for him to utilize electronics prior to his departure for school.
His mother, the Irish Woman, love of my life and bearer of my child, opined that she occasionally asks him to check his school email and grades before school.
Due to my love and respect for her, these protestations did not fall upon deaf ears.
“Verily,” said I, pointing toward the rat’s next that is the boy’s desk, “he may utilize the computer of many hundreds of dollars which I purchased for his education and which now sits at the bottom of a pile of papers.”
Quoth my sprog, “But that’s electronics.” His eyes danced with the knowledge that he had me now. “You said that I cannot use electronics!”
“OK,” I replied with a shrug. “You may not utilize that either. Go to school lacking insight and warning of impending doom and quizzes.”
A look of shock came across his countenance. “But… but….”
I turned upon my heel, marching away from the high keening of his mother.
What the boy is learning, slowly, is that I am a professionally trained asshole. Not only am I trained, but I have years upon years of experience.
What he hasn’t realized, yet, is that I enjoy it.
Tune in next week for another episode of “You may be almost as tall as me, but you’re not even close to being meaner than me.” Same bear time, same bear channel.

90 Years On – Holodomor
90 years ago, millions of innocents in Ukraine were dying of hunger. Both malice and incompetence on the part of Stalin and his lackeys starved more people than any bad harvest or natural disaster ever could.
For these people, and the millions of others who were also murdered by Communism in the 20th Century, we will never forget.

Giving Thanks
My wife and children are safe, clean, and fed. I couldn’t always say that.
My house is whole and clean. I couldn’t always say that.
We have food for not just us, but family. I couldn’t always say that.
We’re still employed, and know that we’ll be able to keep body and soul together. I couldn’t always say that.
For this, and for a lot of other things, thanks be to God.
