Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. – Martin Luther King Jr.

Today’s Earworm
Watching Mulan with Boo this morning. When I queued it up, he protested that it was a ‘girl movie’. When this song came up, he was doing karate with the heroine and is now entranced. He also asked me if I would “die for honor”.
Yep, that’s my boy.

Movie Quotes – Day 20
All day long, I listen to people give me excuses why they can’t work… ‘My back hurts,’ ‘my legs ache,’ ‘I’m only four!’ The sooner he learns life isn’t handed to him on a silver platter, the better! — Scrooged
This may be a little extreme, but I kind of agree with this line. All of my kids have had chores from as early as it was appropriate. Now, I didn’t expect the four year old to go out and earn a living, but I did expect him to pick up his toys. I’ve never understood parents who don’t make their kids work for the extras. Food, shelter, love, and safety are a given for a child, but everything else should be a reward for good conduct or hard work. Once they leave the nest, nothing will be a given, and it’s better to learn how to work for something when you’re a child than it is to crash and burn as an adult.

Musings
- It is difficult to do calisthenics in the same room as an affectionate Labrador Retriever.
- Irish Woman tried her hand at making homemade butter.
- We ended up with a pound of tasty butter and a cup of buttermilk.
- Bonus – homemade buttermilk blueberry pancakes for breakfast.
- It is a sign of love that you are willing to get out of the house early on a Saturday morning to fetch a new sofa-sleeper and chair that your loving wife has purchased.
- Greater love hath no man than a brother-in-law who gives up part of his already-crowded Saturday schedule to help you schlep a sofa-sleeper from the truck to the house.
- A change of plans occurred when we realized that the new sofa wasn’t going to fit down the basement stairs with the equipment we had.
- Thoughts of taking an axe to the walls were considered, but eventually discarded.
- New chair and old couch are in the basement, old chair and new couch are in the living room.
- A side effect of this is that Boo can now do sleep-outs in the living room without me having to break out the air mattress.
- It is a true mark of talent to eat the last of the leftover stew just as the bread you made to eat with it is starting to go stale.

Movie Quotes – Day 19
That’s like pouring perfume on a pig. — They Live!
Eventually, in any process, you have to evaluate and decide if what you’re doing is right, if the manner in which you’re doing it is right, and if you’re the right person for the job. No amount of diligence, brilliance, or personality is going to make you successful if you can’t answer “Yes!” to at least two out of those three questions.

Heads Up – Gun Recall
Passing this along to any of you who own a Ruger American Rifle in .17 HMR or .22 WMRF:
We have determined that Ruger American Rimfire™ rifles chambered in .22 WMRF (Magnum) and .17 HMR manufactured between November 17, 2013 and January 8, 2014 were manufactured without a vent hole. This hole appears just below and behind the serial number on the left-hand side of the receiver. The hole does not serve any function during normal operation of the rifle, but is a safety feature and may help vent gas in the event of a problem such as a ruptured case head or bore obstruction, for example. We want to recall the rifles and add the vent hole.
The link gives details on what exactly to look for in your rifle and how to get it fixed. Please spread the word. This is a real gun safety issue. Maybe we can get MAIG or CSGV to post this on their websites, since safety is their stated raison de etre.
H/T to my sister from another mother for passing on the word to me.

Movie Quotes – Day 18
Sometimes I do what I want to do. The rest of the time, I do what I have to. — Gladiator
One of the hardest lessons I’ve had to learn as a person, and now to teach to my children, is “Business before pleasure”. You have to take care of what must be done before you can do what you want to do. When Irish Woman and I discuss projects around the house, it is not unusual for the ‘discussion’ to come down to “Do we need to do this, or is it just something you want”, and we both spend time on both sides of the argument.. There’s nothing wrong with doing the things that bring you joy, but you have to take care of essentials first.

Dinner Tonight
This is a twist on my stew recipe. It’s a cold, snowy, blowy day, and I needed something to bring up everyone’s core temperature.
Beef Stew with Chilis and Tomatoes
Ingredients:
1 pound beef stew meat, cut into 1/4 to 1/2 inch cubes
1/2 cup seasoned flour, either homemade or commercial
Bacon grease or your favorite pan lubricant
2 large white onions
3 to 4 carrots, washed, peeled, and cut into coins
4 celery stalks, washed, split in two, and sliced into 1/4 inch pieces
1 12 ounce bottle of your favorite beer. Anything with a lot of flavor will work. This might also work well with a good strong red wine.
2 12 ounce cans of beef broth
2 12 ounce cans of Rotel or 1 quart of home-canned tomatoes with chilis and lime
1 pound fresh potatoes, washed and cut into 1 inch cubes
Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper
In a large bowl, combine the seasoned flour and the beef until the beef is evenly coated.
In a large soup kettle, melt enough bacon grease over medium heat to thickly cover the bottom of the kettle. Add the onions, carrots, and celery and saute until the onion softens and starts to become transparent. Add the meat and flour. Brown the meat thoroughly, stirring almost constantly. The flour will want to stick to the bottom of the kettle, so scrape a lot. If necessary, melt in a little more bacon grease. Once the meat is browned, add the beer, broth, tomatoes, and potatoes. Mix thoroughly, scraping the bottom of the kettle to get all of the cooked flour out into the sauce.
Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer, stirring often, for 30 minutes or until the beef and potatoes are thoroughly cooked. Season with the Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper to taste.
Goes well with biscuits or fresh-baked bread.

Today’s Earworm
You know it’s an interesting dream when you’re in the middle of a Russian movie about an eccentric Bolshevik family that’s dragged to the Lubyanka and then the gulag.

Movie Quotes – Day 17
As I expected. “Mary Poppins, practically perfect in every way.” — Mary Poppins
Every now and then, I have the pleasure of doing a self evaluation and being able to say “I’m doing OK.” It doesn’t happen very often, and I never trust my own judgment too much when it comes to myself, but I can’t go through life without, every so often, giving myself a bit of credit.
