Quote of the Day

Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force! You are about to embark upon a great crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and brothers in arms on other fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.

Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped and battle hardened, he will fight savagely.

But this is the year 1944! Much has happened since the Nazi triumphs of 1940-41. The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great defeats, in open battle, man to man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our home fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions of war, and placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men. The tide has turned! The free men of the world are marching together to victory!

I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full victory!

Good Luck! And let us all beseech the blessings of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking.

— Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower

Movie Quotes – Day 157

My family is with me today. They wanted to come with me. To be honest with you, I wasn’t sure how I’d feel coming back here. Every day I think about what you said to me that day on the bridge. I tried to live my life the best that I could. I hope that was enough. I hope that, at least in your eyes, I’ve earned what all of you have done for me.  — Saving Private Ryan

If you ever get the chance, and I suggest that you find a way at some time in your life to do so, you should go to a place like Normandy.  If you can’t get that far from home, I suggest going somewhere like Arlington, Antietam, or Gettysburg.  If you’re feeling adventurous, go somewhere like El Alamein, Gallipoli, or Iwo Jima.  All of these places have one thing in common:  they all are places where men have placed their bodies between death and their homes.  They are all marked with monuments and graves that remind us of the responsibility, which we all carry, to deserve what they bought for us with their blood and their lives.

Blogs Roundup

  • Kathy Jackson makes a good point:  it’s not about exacting justice from the other party or whether they deserve your reaction to an attack, it’s about staying alive and going home.  She makes an even better one about the necessity of actually carrying your gun, getting training with your gun, and practicing with your gun if you expect to use it for defense.
  • Chris at Lucky Gunner does a good write-up of the CZ-83 and CZ-82 for carry and defense.
  • Mama, they’re putting Windows into my beloved B-52.  That’s right, our aging fleet of nuclear bombers will require monthly patching.  Curtis LeMay, help us!
  • New Jovian Thunderbolt gives a good break down of the pro’s and cons of the pro’s and anti’s.
  • Brigid is taking over temporary custody of the EPostal matches.   This one looks like a lot of fun, and it just so happens that I’m going to the range next Saturday.  I’ll have to take a long a few of those targets.  In a related note, please join me in wishing Mr. Completely, who has been doing these matches for years, a swift recovery.
  • Holly Chism has published her new book, and I heartily recommend it.  I was lucky enough to be a beta reader for this one, and it’s a great read.  Expect a review in the next few days.
  • Jay recently experienced one of the worst feelings a parent can have.  I’ve been there, and it sucks.  I’m glad to hear that his daughter was just out having an adventure.
  • OldNFO gives us some good statistics about the people who fought and died in the Vietnam War.

Movie Quotes – Day 156

Captain, it is I, Ensign Pulver, and I just threw your stinkin’ palm tree overboard! Now what’s all this crud about no movie tonight? — Mister Roberts

Eventually, every bad relationship will come to a head.  It can take years of submissiveness, avoidance, passive aggressive behavior, or just plain indifference, but eventually the only healthy option is confrontation.  You’re usually better off if you do it early, but you’re never better off if you avoid it altogether.  It’s better to get things off your chest than to have someone on your neck forever.

First song I ever slow danced to with a girl.  We had the album of this concert, and my friend’s big sister liked the song, and I was as tall as she was.

Garden Update

Well, summer has officially arrived.  Honestly, it’s been a great spring for working in the garden, and now that the heavy work is done, I’m OK with heat, humidity, sunshine, and rain doing most of the work for the next few months.

First, we have the potato box.  This is a bit of an experiment, and I’m hoping it gives me some tubers for mashing, smashing, roasting, boiling, and baking.

Potato Plants – 2 weeks after planting

Next, we have the kale.  This is the second growth of the crop.  We’ve already had two meals from this patch, and we’ll get at least two more.  I’m going to keep them in the ground as long as they keep growing.

I see a lot of salads in our future:

Lettuce

We are going to have our first blackberries this year, and we’ve already gotten a lot of strawberries.

Blackberry Blossoms

We’re also going to have our first crop of apples.

Our peppers, onions, and tomatoes are also doing well. Some of the tomato plants are already blooming, so if the weather cooperates, we should have a good haul of spaghetti and chili sauce this year.

Movie Quotes – Day 155

I don’t know where we’re goin’, but there’s no sense bein’ late.  — Quigley Down Under

The only thing worse than a bad reaction is no reaction at all.  Even if you’re not entirely sure what’s going on, freezing up and just watching means you’re not doing anything at all to deal with the situation.  You can assess the situation while you’re moving, but get moving!

Musings

  • I don’t know Bowe Bergdahl.  I don’t know anyone who knows Bowe Bergdahl.  I know the official line, and I’ve read the Internet posts that relate a story told by those who claim to have either served with him or been in on the search for him.  I still believe that the military has enough integrity to do an honest inquiry about what happened the night Bergdahl went missing from his unit, and am holding my comment on that until something official comes from the DoD.  All I will say is that, hero or dupe, Bergdahl is an American and is back with Americans.  If he’s a hero, then he will get what he deserves from us.  If he’s a deserter, then he will get what he deserves from us. But it will come from us, not from those who held him for five years.
  • Someone needs to tell President Obama that taking an hour to ask Speaker Boehner and Majority Leader Reid to the White House to talk about something he’s about to do would get a whole bunch of people off of his ass in a lot of situations.  Then again, that would require him to admit that the Congress is a co-equal branch of government, and we can’t have that, now can we?
  • When the best that can be said about your firearm is that it’s similar to a Smith and Wesson Sigma and is California legal, then it’s probably not going to go into my gun safe.  No amount of engraving on the gun is going to overcome that.
  • New life goals:
    • Work in a building where I don’t have to go through metal detectors at the entrance
    • Have a room that’s sound proofed enough that I can sit in it and watch Blazing Saddles while Boo is in the house without raising the ire of Irish Woman
    • Have a place that’s remote enough that it’s hard to reach me but not so remote that it’s a pain in the butt for me to go.
    • Find time to read the ever growing stack of books that I’m going to read when I have time.
    • Take Boo back to North Dakota and show him how to make forts and tunnels in the grass

Movie Quotes – Day 154

Well, it’s rather brutal here. Right now we are advising all our clients to put everything they’ve got into canned food and shotguns. — Gremlins 2:  The New Batch

Life’s pretty good right now.  Both of us have good jobs, everyone’s healthy, and we have a solid roof over our heads.  But that can all change in moments.  Be it weather, illness, or just having your employer decide that they can do without you, the world can turn sideways on you.  Life is going to kick you in the gut occasionally.  The question is how are you going to prepare for it?
