100 Years On – The Last Day

100 years ago today, the world was at peace, or at least as much at peace as we shaved apes can get.  We haven’t really enjoyed a day like that in the years since.  The great powers of Europe had spent several decades preparing for a war, but they had, through diplomacy or a balance of terror, kept the lid on Pandora’s box.

People went about their business as they had all their lives.  A generation of young men in all corners of the globe was coming of age and enjoying the flower of youth.  The future was bright for them, maybe in a way that hasn’t been experienced since. In five short years, that generation would be shattered and much reduced, to the point that young women in England despaired of ever marrying due to a shortage of men.

The fields of Belgium and France were much the same as they had been for centuries.  There were no trenches, shell holes, or unexploded shells to mar the picture postcard landscape.  The same could be said of Poland, Russia, Italy, and Turkey.

I don’t think anyone went to bed on June 27, 1914 realizing that they had just enjoyed the last day of peace that our world would know for many years.  I do think that the best lesson we can draw from that is to recognize that any day where humanity isn’t butchering itself wholesale is a good day, and that we should be thankful for them.  You never know when the good days will end and how long it will be until the next one comes.

Movie Quotes – Day 177

Mr. Salt: Ladies first, and that means Veruca.
Grandpa Joe: [to Charlie] If she’s a lady, I’m a Vermicious Knid.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

If you want to be treated like a lady, act like one.  I’m not saying you should act like a shrinking violet. A woman can be a beer drinking hell raiser, and still deserve to be treated like a lady.  What makes a lady is what makes a gentleman: honor.  A lady doesn’t lie, steal, or cheat, nor does she tolerate those who do.  She stands up for those who cannot, defends that which is right, and never turns away from a challenge.

New Project – 100 Years On

This week marks the 100th anniversary of the event that ignited World War I, the horrendous event that shaped the rest of the 20th century and the aftermath of which impacts us today.  If the Great War had been avoided or gone another way, we might have been spared the millions of dead from Nazism and Communism, and the situation in the MidEast and the Third World would be drastically different.  One thing that has struck me is how few people who aren’t history nerds know much about the First World War.

I’m starting a new project here, which I’m calling “100 Years On”.  Over the next few years, I’m going to mark some of the major events in the war, from Sarajevo to Versailles.  Some of it will be information; some of it will be me editorializing on what happened and how those events are either connected to today’s world or are mirrors of things we are seeing today.

I’m not going to do a “Day by Day” kind of thing, because, to be honest, I wouldn’t be able to do that well.  I’m not an expert on the subject, and others have already done work much better than I could with my time and talent.  If you’re looking for sources of information on the war and its details, I suggest you read the outstanding books on the subject authored by Barbara Tuchman, John Keegan, and Niall Ferguson.  If you’re more of a podcast kind of person, I suggest listening to Dan Carlin’s current arc in his Hardcore History series, “Countdown to Armageddon”.

I’m sure there are other sources of information out there, and if you can recommend one, please drop a comment here.  Like I said, this is becoming a forgotten war now that the last of the veterans are gone, and that’s a shame and a danger.

I hope you enjoy.

Movie Quotes – Day 176

The world can be a cruel place to an honest man, Frank. — In The Line Of Fire

Today, I decided that it was better to keep my mouth shut and do my job instead of saying exactly what I thought and being dragged into someone else’s drama.  I always try to be honest, but discretion is the better part of valor, and it keeps you from being the messenger with the hole in his forehead.

  • Ambulance Driver relates a story about a business we should make famous.
  • Auntie J shows us how to handle young boys who are still fearful of cooties.  You know, a male could never do that.
  •  Nancy R. runs headlong into the femguns issue.  Personally, I wish they’d quit making everything in flat dark earth or tactical black.  What’s wrong with a nice blued gun?
  • OldNFO reminds me of one of the reasons I hated traveling for the military – expense reports.  Strange thing is, the couple of times I had to do one for another government agency, it was no muss, no fuss, and apologies for it taking a couple of days to get my settlement check.
  • Borepatch links us to the DoJ memo that is used to justify the extra-judicial execution of United States citizens in the event that the President decides that they’ve turned traitor and it’s not worth the bother of actually capturing and trying them.  Let’s try this one on for size:  Would President Nixon have been justified in having the airplane that Jane Fonda used to travel to North Vietnam shot down?  What if FDR had called up Curtis LeMay and told him to bomb Tokyo flat so that they could have a shot at killing Tokyo Rose and her children?  Would those have been justified?
  • BRM, Jennifer, and Michael Z. Williamson all have good points on the subject of rape and its prevention.

Movie Quotes – Day 175

Now you might not believe it, but under fire Animal Mother is one of the… finest human beings in the world. All he needs is somebody to throw hand grenades at him the rest of his life.  — Full Metal Jacket

I’ve known a lot of people who were absolutely brilliant in high pressure situations, but turned into complete jackasses during downtime.  Soldiers that were awesome when on duty almost had to have a minder on the weekends or after we got back from the field.  Their behavior, so long as it didn’t hurt anyone, would usually be forgiven because, in every way except acting like one, they were a good soldier.

I think of this as the warrior versus the soldier.  You see, a warrior is outstanding in battle.  He prepares himself to a very fine edge for it, and executes as flawlessly as possible.  His knowledge of all things related to his chosen avocation is boundless, and he is always straining to improve.

The soldier, on the other hand, is everything the warrior is, and more.

The warrior may be outstanding at shooting his weapon, either at the range or in combat, but the soldier not only qualifies as an expert marksman, but also knows how to teach others about the weapon and how to shoot it.  A warrior may be able to drive like a mad man to save a comrade or close with the enemy, but the soldier also knows how to properly do checks and maintenance on it so that it runs when it’s needed.  The warrior makes sure that his subordinates know everything they know to be great warriors, too, but the soldier makes sure they are given opportunities to learn and lead so that they can become more.  A warrior is disciplined when it comes to the art of war, while a soldier is disciplined in all things.  A warrior brings glory to himself and to the military when he goes to war.  A soldier brings honor to the military no matter where he is.

In short, it’s not enough to be a badass in battle.  You have to be more.  There isn’t always going to be someone chucking hand grenades at you, and you have to be willing to do the right thing in their absence.

Today’s Earworm

In honor of the new piano, which Irish Woman promises can count as her birthday, anniversary, and Christmas present.

Yeah, I’m not buying that.  I may not be a smart man, but I’m smarter than that.

Movie Quotes – Day 174

Remember, there’s always something cleverer than yourself. — Excalibur

One of the things that I need to remind myself of occasionally is that I am rarely the smartest person in the room.  This is a trap that I see a lot of people falling into, either in person or over the Internet, including myself.  Yes, there are some very narrow subjects about which I know more than 80% of the people out there, but those areas are very specialized and do not lend themselves to mastering other subjects.

Also, if you recognize that you are not the go-to expert on something, you recognize that you still have something to learn.  That opens up more avenues in a given subject to explore, more people to meet and learn from, and more subjects that will interest you.

How boring it must be to truly be the smartest person in a room.

Musings

  • I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again:  We take more stuff with us for family campouts than a squad of soldiers will take for an 18 month deployment.
  • Giving the dogs a bath in the bed of my truck created a clean spot, which required me to wash the rest of the truck.
    • Of course it rained all weekend, why do you ask?
  • A lot of people are saying that the Obama presidency is sliding fast toward irrelevancy.  I think we need to strengthen our flanks and double the guard.  A rat is most dangerous when it’s trapped and losing.
  • I tried an experiment of freezing water bottles and putting them in the cooler to see if they took longer than ice cubes to melt.  I was also trying to not have waterlogged food after a couple of days.
    • They worked OK for about a day, then we had to go back to ice cubes.
  • Non-DEET, natural insect repellant isn’t worth the trouble.
    • Not effective against mosquitoes, gnats, or chiggers.  No ticks, though.  Unless you count the one that I developed after two days of Boo singing his own interpretation of Disney anthems.
  • On Thursday night, I worked hard to make sure that there was appropriate, nutritious, and tasty food for everyone.  By Sunday morning, I was letting Boo snack on yellow Skittles while I got a breakfast of MegaMart banana muffins and juice boxes together.
  • When it’s too hot and muggy to drink beer, it’s time to envy those who own an air-conditioned camper.
  • Life sure has gotten easier since I figured out that I have two teenagers who want to learn how to do stuff.
  • For the family pot luck dinner, a real man would have made something roasted on a spit over a slow fire or made using natural wood coals in a cast iron dutch oven.  I, not being a real man, threw a ham into a crock pot and called it good.

Movie Quotes – Day 173

Pardner, it’s been my experience that there ain’t nothin’ more ruthless and treacherous than a genuine good woman. — Paint Your Wagon

Lord, protect me from Irish Woman when she has an idea and knows she’s right.  My lovely wife is such a good soul that when she gets a notion, examines it, determines its righteousness, and starts moving from A to B to C to Q, there isn’t much that will slow her down, much less stop her.

Of course, if she wasn’t like that, there wouldn’t be a lot of things getting done around here.
