Movie Quotes – Day 250
Look, these people, they have no jobs, no food, no education, no future. I just figure that we have two things we can do. Help, or we can sit back and watch a country destroy itself on CNN. Right? — Blackhawk Down
That line was written about a failed state in the Horn of Africa. It could very easily reference a lot of places in the United States. Big cities like Detroit and Los Angeles are eating their own tails, and whole swaths of their sprawl are no-go zones for decent people. It could also be said for a lot of rural areas, like the San Joaquin Valley in California or small towns across the mid-west. We have allowed entire generations to become dependent on government for everything, and Uncle Sugar is running out of money. At least, he’s running out of money for the things these communities have become addicted to. We have plenty of money to pay for vacations and travel for our elected elite. We have plenty of money for studies on why life is unfair and why that makes some of us feel bad. We have plenty of money to pay for the mistakes of corporations and to pay off political donors with lucrative contracts for self-licking ice cream cones.
If we are going to provide aid to the poor in this country, we need to provide aid that is going to get them to the point they don’t need it. We need to educate them to give them the skills they need to find jobs. We need to tailor entitlement programs so that only the basics of life are covered so that there is a stimulus to do better. We need to make sure that they do not fall into the padded trap that having no consequences for bad decisions becomes.
If we’re going to continue to burn money to keep the lower classes from torching the joint, we might as well use it to make it less likely they’ll play with matches.

Grrrrrrrrrr
As I was sitting on the couch, sipping my morning coffee and reading about the first battle of Ypres, Girlie Bear approached me with some news. It seems that her Algebra II teacher, while he waits to get his class going because there’s a delay in the school handing out the tablet computers that are mandatory for the class, has decided to be industrious and teach the class to use the graphing calculator that is also mandated. Girlie Bear was proud of herself that she was able to do the work on paper with out the $100 calculator, mainly because both her Algebra I teacher and her parents have pounded in “rise over run” when it comes to graphing linear equations.
But I know that if the teacher is requiring a graphing calculator, such paper and pencil work will only get her so far before she’ll lag behind. I looked at the budget and was grudgingly pressing the “Check Out” button on Amazon when it occurred to me that I had already purchased a tablet for her to use in this class. Tablets are computers. Computers come with applications, and this specific computer has its very own app store for downloading things like, oh, I don’t know, graphing calculators.
I whipped out my own tablet, went to Google Play, and lo and behold, there were about a dozen graphing calculator apps to be had, most of them free and none of them costing $100. At that point, I wiped away the tear of blood that was running down my cheek as I tried to wrap my mind around a class that required ownership of a tablet computer so that the school could save money on textbooks, yet did not utilize the free or low-cost apps that such a doo-dad makes easy.
A polite, professional email has been sent to her math teacher, enquiring about this perceived inconsistency. I’m hoping that a lightbulb will go off over someone’s head, and I won’t be on the hook for yet another calculator (Like Lowe’s, I seriously should have bought stock in Texas Instruments years ago). I’m hopeful, but I’m also keeping that TI-84 Plus in my shopping cart at Amazon.
Isn’t technology wonderful?

Musings
- When you tell your father that you need to be picked up at 9 PM from a fundraiser, that means he will be ready to pick you up at 9 PM.
- When your father calls you at 9 PM to tell you that he is at the ice cream parlor two blocks away from where you are, and that you should walk to meet him there, it does not mean to wait 30 minutes before starting your walk to meet him.
- On the bright side, I didn’t have to share my ice cream.
- Today, Boo rode on the float for his school in the local fall festival parade. I walked alongside with the other parents.
- Note to self – Converse tennis shoes are not proper walking shoes.
- After the parade, I volunteered with Girlie Bear’sJROTC group, and was placed on grill duty.
- One side benefit of this job was that I will not need to trim the hair on my knuckles for a month. They were nicely singed back after about 5 minutes.
- Apparently I got a little sunburned today. Irish Woman seems to be taking a great amount of joy from that.
- Irish Woman gotChick-Fil-A for dinner. I got smoked venisonbackstrap andherbed potatoes.
- I offered to share, and she politely declined.
- I went over to my brother-in-law’s house tonight, and he opened up the gun safes to show me some stuff. I now have new bucket-list items.
- Achievement for the day – Going to the DIY supply store and only getting the one thing we went in to get.

Movie Quotes – Day 249
T.E. Lawrence: It’s my manner, sir.
General Murray: Your manner?
T.E. Lawrence: Yes. It looks insubordinate, but it isn’t really.
I’m told that I’m a bit of a smartass. I have no idea what they’re talking about. I just tend to see the world in a slightly twisted manner, and I find things that follow that twist as humorous. Of course, I had a lot of my speech filters surgically removed years ago, so a lot of things that most people would just say in their heads and then enjoy a small chuckle go directly from brain to mouth with me.
Some see this as a career limiting trait. I see it as a test to see who I can work with and who will be difficult.

Put Up or Shut Up – Minimum Wage
So, the social justice cause of the month appears to be another round of “people deserve a raise”. Basically, it’s been deemed to be unfair that people are having to work part-time at the current federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour. Government statistics from 2013 indicate that a huge percentage of minimum-wage earners are young (under 25), and that you are much more likely to work minimum wage if you have not graduated high school. Minimum wage jobs are overwhelmingly in the “hospitality” or “service” industries, meaning mostly restaurant work and menial labor.
In other words, if you are low-skilled and just starting out in the job force, you’re more than likely to be making minimum wage, at least for a while. I did it when I was a teenager. Of course, I only made minimum wage for about six months before I got a raise, but that’s probably white privilege at work right there. Yep, all the white privilege at work in North Dakota got me that extra $.25 an hour in 1986. Just another example of the Scandihoovian Mafia looking out for one of its own.
Yesterday, several highly publicized protests occurred, in which the organizers were demanding higher wages for fast-food workers. I’m guessing that the job market for fry cooks, dishwashers, and order-takers is about what it was when I was a teenager, and fast-food restaurants such as McDonald’s and Burger King have a high concentration of minimum-wage earners. In some places, they were demanding $15.00 an hour for the workers, which is more than double current rates.
Of course, in a lot of places, the state or local minimum wage is over the federal minimum, with Seattle recently raising it to the vaunted amount of $15.00. To be honest, I prefer that state and local government figure out what they want their minimum wage to be and set it accordingly to the federal government setting a nation-wide floor on wages. If I were king, and you can all enjoy that shudder of fear that I just induced in you, there would be no federal minimum wage in the states. Let Alabama, California, and Vermont figure out what workers should get, and let the federal government worry about the District of Columbia, the territories, and military reservations.
Depressing the income of minimum-wage earners is the current practice of severely curtailing hours for part-time employees in order to evade medical benefits mandated by the Affordable Care Act. If you were working 35 hours a week at $7.25 an hour and trying to either live or raise a family on that, and your boss cuts you back to 25 hours a week, then you’re going to feel the pinch. The answer, according to the President Emeritus and his supporters, is to force employers to pay more. So, employers are damned if they do, or damned if they don’t when it comes to employee hours. They can either pay more per hour or give more hours and then pay for insurance.
Is it any wonder that employers are saying that if they are forced into this, they will be firing people in order to afford it? Unemployment benefits are cheaper in just about any way you look at it.
Here’s where I say put up or shut up on minimum wage: If you are currently working for the minimum wage, either the federal $7.25 an hour or a higher local minimum, leave your job until the hourly rate is raised to what you consider a more equitable rate. Seriously, quit your job and picket. Have at it. I’m sure that they won’t be able to find someone to fluff pillows or brown pre-cooked french fries while you’re out there.
But stop with the whining, OK? If you’re trying to raise kids, and you’re looking at working minimum wage as a permanent solution, then shame on you. If you were born here, and the best you can hope for in life is to flip burgers for $7.25 an hour, then it’s on you. No matter how shitty your neighborhood or upbringing was, I bet I can find someone from the same background who took advantage of public education, got off their ass, and is making at least double that, even assuming they didn’t go to college or trade school. Shut your piehole and get to work. If you show up on time, don’t steal from your employer in money, supplies, or time spent goofing off on the clock, and keep your nose clean for a few months, you’ll be surprised what opportunities await you.
If you live in a place where flipping burgers or picking up cigarette butts is the best job available, no matter how smart and motivated you are, the word you should have in your mind is “relocation”. Yeah, it sucks to leave the plot of dirt that your daddy, and his daddy, and his daddy before him lived just above the starvation line, but if nostalgia is what’s keeping you in poverty, then it’s your own fault. I’d say “Go West, Young Man!”, but I wouldn’t tell my worst enemy to go to California. Texas is nice in the springtime, and there is a lot of austere beauty in North Dakota snowfields. I hear that both are good places to find a job if you’re willing to actually work.
Of course, if you got a degree in underwater basket weaving, women’s studies, use of the semi-colon in early Elizabethan bathroom graffiti, or any other similarly useless degree and the best you can do is cleaning toilets, well, you’ve proven that education doesn’t fix stupid. Want to get paid for your knowledge? Well, then, maybe you should get a degree that comes with a skill others will pay for.
If you’re bitching about not getting as many hours as you used to on minimum wage, you can thank Barack Obama, Harry Reid, and Nancy Pelosi for that. They’re the ones that gave employers the choice of either going out of business, firing people, or lowering their employees hours, not me. You elected them, you reelected them, and now you can suck on the exhaust pipe of the bus they threw you under.
But, DB, you say, it’s not fair that the franchise owner of a McDonald’s makes so much more than his employees! And it’s horrendously unfair that the CEO of McDonald’s makes millions while his employees make slave wages and have to go on food stamps to feed their children! Multi-billion dollar corporations can spend some of their profits on their people!
You’re right, those with more training, education, experience, drive, and intelligence tend to make more money in our society. Is it fair? I don’t know, but I do know that nowhere on the contract for life did it say that it would be fair. You want to make $5 million a year as the CEO of a multi-national? OK, then put in years of hard work, get your ignorant ass a useful education, and earn that $5 million a year.
Oh, and by the way, companies do not work for their employees. That seems to be a common misconception these days. They work for their owners, usually their stockholders. Their job is to make money for those people so that those people will continue to invest money in the company, after which the company can either employ more people or find new ways to make more money of the same number of people’s work. Don’t like it? OK, then start your own company, and if you do, I truly wish you luck. Entrepreneurs are one of the few ways to truly create wealth in this country.
My point is that the company doesn’t exist as a jobs program. It’s there to make as much profit as possible and then distribute it to its owners, not to its employees. To paraphrase Jack Welch, once you cash the paycheck, you are square with your employer. It doesn’t matter how much you made them, because they’ve paid you the amount you agreed to when you hired on. If you don’t like it, then please remember that indentured servitude and slavery was abolished over a century and a half ago, so you’re free to find employment elsewhere.
And as for people having to go on welfare while working at minimum wage in order to feed their kids, well, I think this is a tragedy. But it’s not a national shame that you can work part-time at a wage that was designed for low-skill workers and not be able to feed your family. It’s a shame that parents continue to look at part-time, low-skill, minimum-wage jobs as a permanent solution and doom their children to living off the largesse of the state. Seriously, what did people in low-skill, low-wage jobs do before food stamps and WIC? Oh, that’s right, they got off their asses, worked two and three jobs, fed their kids, and looked for a better job. Maybe y’all should try that? Oh, and while you’re at it, quit having babies until you can afford to feed them without taking food out of the mouths of my children, OK?
Now, none of this pertains to someone who is temporarily down on their luck. If you’ve lost your job or are just out of school and are looking for work, and you use part-time, minimum-wage employment as a crutch until something better comes along, then you’re not part of the problem. Trust me, I’ve been there, and I understand. It’s the people who use a McJob as their life-long employment plan, then expect the rest of us to either support their children for them or pay $8 for a dollar’s worth of meat, cheese, and bread who catch in my craw.
So, in closing, to my low-skilled, low-wage brethren: put up or shut up. Refuse to work for what you consider slave wages, and eventually the evil businessmen will raise their offer a bit. If you’re not ready to do that, shut up. And while you’re at it, fries are up and the bathroom needs mopping.

100 Years On – First Battle of the Marne
On September 5, 1914, after retreating for hundreds of miles, the British Expeditionary Force and the French Army turned and attacked the advancing German army. The Germans had marched through Belgium and swept the British and the French before them. They were pretty close to the end of their rope at that point, but their goals of surrounding their opponents and even taking Paris were tantalizingly close. Instead, the Germans drifted apart at a critical juncture between two armies, and the Entente forces, as Churchill said, “probed its way into the German liver”. The Entente counterattacked along the Marne, and all hopes for German victory were lost. After the battle, in which the French threw everything they had into turning the Germans back, or at least stopping them short of Paris, the Germans retreated back to what became the static front line that is the principle symbol of the war.
So what happened? The Germans seemed to have the war in the bag, and then a miracle happened for the British and French. One day the BEF was making plans to withdraw back to England, and a week later they’ve got the Germans on the run back to the Aisne.
Looking at the sources, there are a lot of opinions as to what caused the Germans to get caught in a bad position and forced to retreat. Like a lot of situations, I believe it was a lot of different factors that led to the Allied victory at the Marne. A lot of them boil down to the German’s not following their overall war strategy, the Schlieffen Plan.
First, Von Kluck’s forces were brought much further inland than the original plan called for (“letting the last man on the right, brush the Channel with his sleeve”). If he had taken his drive further west, he would have easily outflanked the BEF and would not have had to fight as hard as he did to get within sight of Paris.
Second, the Germans counterattacked against French forces in the south-east portion of the Western Front. Here, the French had attacked into Alsace-Lorraine and beyond, and after a few days were strung out and vulnerable. The Germans took advantage of this, and drove them back. However, the tactical victory contributed to a strategic defeat. The French armies’ retreat back into France shortened both their supply lines and made units available for the French commander, Joffre, to use as he needed them in other parts of the front. If the French had been allowed to continue their advance, even into Germany herself, those forces would not have been available to stem the flow of Germans in from Belgium, would have required supplies that the French needed to defend Paris, and would have been an easy fruit to either pluck or let wither on the vine after French collapse.
Finally, and this is debatable as to whether it mattered or not, the forces in the west were reduced by a small amount to provide unneeded reinforcements on the Eastern Front. It was only a few corps that would have been in reserve, but I believe that had they been allowed to stay with their original war assignments, they could have relieved some of the worn-down German units that were pushed back at the Marne. That may have made a difference in the final equation.
Basically, the Germans took their eyes off of the prize. The Schlieffen plan was a judo move involving millions of men. If the French had been allowed to overextend themselves while von Kluck made a buttonhook to get around the left flank of the BEF and the French, it would have made it very difficult for the French to not sue for peace as they had 40 years earlier. By changing the plan, violating its precepts, and weakening their striking force, the Germans opened themselves up for eventual defeat. It is interesting that after the Marne, there is rarely any talk on the German side of winning the war on the Western Front in the same way as it was envisioned prior to the first bicyclist crossing into Belgium.

Movie Quotes – Day 248
It seems it always happens. Whenever we get too high-hat and too sophisticated for flag-waving, some thug nation decides we’re a push-over all ready to be blackjacked. And it isn’t long before we’re looking up, mighty anxiously, to be sure the flag’s still waving over us. — Yankee Doodle Dandy
I take a lot of things for granted in my day-to-day life. I drive to work on pretty good roads. My kids go to good schools. My wife is relatively safe to walk in our parks, alone and unmolested. It’s not like that for a vast number of people in our world. Is all of this because we live in America? Not entirely, because there are parts of our country where these things aren’t true. But in all of the places I’ve visited and lived in, it’s never been as likely to be that way as it is here. Yeah, we have our warts, and we fight amongst ourselves, but there’s nowhere else I’d rather live.
