  2. Thoughts on ribbons….

Sometimes… it gets daggone expensive OR impossible to find some of those WWII or Viet Nam ribbons to keep updating them…

Plus, from WWII to the present day, there has been a steady increase in the number of campaign awards as well as NATO and Unit decorations.

IE- go on a deployment (sea service +1) as part of a NATO operation (+1) with a unit that does great things (Presidential/Branch Unit citation)(+1) in combat (+1 for Navy Marines/ Army CIB) in a recognized theater of operations (Iraq/afg campaign) under the Global War on Terror Banner (+1)

thats like 2 rows for just setting foot in theater….

  3. There’s also the policy of considering awards when calculating promotion points. Suddenly the Fobbits and REMFs (There’s a difference) don’t get promotions, so other awards are created. Although why there is such a thing as the Army Service Ribbon eludes me. Trust me, I knew I was in the Army when I reported to Basic Training, I don’t need a &*%$ ribbon for “surviving boot”

When I got out of the Regular Army in peacetime, I had one row of ribbons in my rack. When I rejoined the Guard 6 years later, during GWOT, I added 2 more just for serving during war time, and one that was created by GWB that applied retroactively. By the time I got back from Afghanistan, I had 3 rows (I think) starting on a 4th what with it being a NATO Operation, the Campaign Medal, and the ArCom and GCM.

They put it on my DD214, I’ll wear ’em. But I’ll freely admit I was a Fobbit who just loaded trucks.
