30 Days of Abraham Lincoln – Day 21

We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature. — 1861

My Take – This is possibly the ugliest national election I’ve ever seen, and we’re not even in the home stretch, where desperation will bring new lows.  The danger in this is that the rancor will keep ramping up after the election.  We must remember that we are Americans, no matter which lever we pull in the voting booth.  We can disagree, we can argue, we may even fight, but we cannot lose sight of that.  When we forget our connections to each other, we risk consequences as dire as the country faced in 1861.

  1. Just wait until the Ayatollah Obama’s crew starts playing the race card for real, then follows with the religion card and the sexual discrimination card. For their part, the Wingnuts have a few cards of their own they haven’t played yet, and one or two up their sleeve. I’m waiting.

You are quite right. This is an ugly election and neither side is interested in a real solution for our nation’s real problems – the economy, health care coverage, education… the list is endless, but it begins with the economy. One man, an entrepreneur and self-made millionaire I always admired told me that “If you take care of the gross, the rest of the problems will take care of themselves.” He was right. The US Government is not taking care of the gross – the GNP.

  2. Concur, and concur with MSJ’s comment!

  3. Thanks, Old NFO. I’m surrounded by Liberals and other well-meaning people, and while they are all very nice people and I love them dearly – they really don’t have a clue sometimes. It’s nice to know I’m not completely alone.

    • Nope. Most of the liberals I know are good people that I disagree with. But it’s amazing how quickly I go from being a misguided soul that they are nice to the spawn of the devil when I mention that I hope President Obama loses the election and goes on to make PSA’s with Jimmy Carter.
