Attention to Orders

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, March 3, 1863, has awarded in the name of Congress the Medal of Honor to Specialist Kyle J. White, United States Army.

Specialist Kyle J. White distinguished himself by acts of gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as a radio telephone operator with Company C, 2nd Battalion Airborne, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade during combat operations against an armed enemy in Nuristan Province, Afghanistan on November 9, 2007.

On that day, Specialist White and his comrades were returning to Bella Outpost from a shura with Aranas village elders.  As the soldiers traversed a narrow path surrounded by mountainous, rocky terrain, they were ambushed by enemy forces from elevated positions.  Pinned against a steep mountain face, Specialist White and his fellow soldiers were completely exposed to enemy fire.  Specialist White returned fire and was briefly knocked unconscious when a rocket-propelled grenade impacted near him.

When he regained consciousness, another round impacted near him, embedding small pieces of shrapnel in his face.  Shaking off his wounds, Specialist White noticed one of his comrades lying wounded nearby.  Without hesitation, Specialist White exposed himself to enemy fire in order to reach the soldier and provide medical aid.

After applying a tourniquet, Specialist White moved to an injured Marine, providing aid and comfort until the Marine succumbed to his wounds.  Specialist White then returned to the soldier and discovered that he had been wounded again.  Applying his own belt as an additional tourniquet, Specialist White was able to stem the flow of blood and save the soldier’s life.

Noticing that his and the other soldiers’ radios were inoperative, Specialist White exposed himself to enemy fire yet again in order to secure a radio from a deceased comrade.  He then provided information and updates to friendly forces, allowing precision airstrikes to stifle the enemy’s attack and ultimately permitting medical evacuation aircraft to rescue him, his fellow soldiers, Marines, and Afghan army soldiers.

Specialist Kyle J. White.  Extraordinary heroism and selflessness above and beyond the call of duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, Company C, 2nd Battalion Airborne, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade, and the United States Army.

Movie Quotes – Day 133

You know, he don’t have a straight angle in that whole god-damned porch, or the whole house for that matter. He is the worst damn carpenter.– Unforgiven

Irish Woman really has a high opinion of my skills.  She believes that I’m a competent carpenter, gardener, cabinet maker, painter, plumber, electrician, and a plethora of other DIY skill sets.  To be honest, I look at a lot of my projects, and the best I can say is that they’re not a public health and safety hazard.  One little trick I use is to always make sure to use an indelible marker somewhere on a project to put my name and the date of assembly on it.  That way when it’s replaced or fixed in a few years or decades, they’ll know who to blame for the creative engineering and bad decisions they uncover.

Note – Edited to make the last few sentences actually make sense.  Don’t blog when you’re half asleep!

Musings

  • Taking a six year old fishing is a great way to wind up a weekend.
    • Half the work is to get Boo to sit still long enough to watch his bobber.  I was successful for about 30 seconds on several occasions.
    • We got a couple of bites, and about half of my casts had to be pulled back in immediately because the doughball I put on the hook kept on going in a ballistic arc after the hook stopped moving forward.
  • You know you’ve given up when you’re happy to drive to the farmers’ hardware store 20 minutes from the house so that your wife can look at galvanized steel tubs.
    • Apparently one of our goldfish ponds is going to be replaced with a redneck water feature.
  • Baby pigs are very cute.  Almost cute enough for me to buy one and bring it home.
    • Yes, I got “The Look”.
    • I was going to name it “Bacon”, so we’d all win out in the end.  But would she listen?
  • I should have put a sign at the entrance to my cube today. It would have saved a lot of time by reading:
    • Yes, I went to a conference in Las Vegas.  No, I did not gamble in the casinos.  Nope, not one bit.  No, I did not see any hookers.  No, I did not see any shows.  Yes, I spent all day, every day walking around the conference and attending meetings.  Yes, the food was good.  No, I did not stay at one of the hotels on The Strip.  No, I did not go to see Hoover Dam or the Grand Canyon.  Yes, I am a disappointment for not going out and having fun until the wee hours of the night.
  • If I ever need to know if I have a role in my team, all I need to do is go away for a few days, then measure the amount of work that piles up in my absence.
  • If Moonshine was to try to get any more comfortable sleeping on our couch last night, he would have needed a beer and the remote.

Movie Quotes – Day 132

Grumpy: Angel, ha! She’s a female! And all females is poison! They’re full of wicked wiles!
Bashful: What are wicked wiles?
Grumpy: I don’t know, but I’m agin’ ’em.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

It took a lot of time after my divorce before I started dating again.  In fact, it was over two years from the time that my ex decided it was best that we go our separate ways until I met Irish Woman.  I knew I was angry, both at my ex and at women in general.   I recognized that if I were to have anything to do with a woman, it would not be healthy, and nobody deserved to be my emotional punching bag while I got myself together.  I wasn’t quite as abrupt about it as Grumpy, but the underlying feeling was the same.  I guess you could call it ‘irrationally applying a bad filter to all inputs from women’.

Luckily for me, Irish Woman showed me that not all women were evil, hateful things.  She showed me that I was a better man than the thing that was sitting at the bottom of my psyche.  Our relationship and family are rarely easy, but they’re definitely the best I’ve ever had.

Movie Quotes – Day 131

It’s not like my mother is a maniac or a raving thing. She just goes a little mad sometimes. We all go a little mad sometimes. Haven’t you?  — Psycho

Ladies, if you don’t realize that your kids have driven you at least a little batty, you’re farther gone than you think.  You are whipsawed between pride in their achievements, happiness in their joy, anger at their less than helpful behavior, and fear for their future.  You are on call for skinned knees, bonked noggins, bruised egos, hungry stomachs, and broken hearts.  You teach them to talk, to walk, to do long division and laundry, and to stand on their own two feet.

If you’re a mother that does her job, thank you.  You’re making the world a better place.  You deserve more than one day, and you deserve a heck of a lot of credit for what you do.

Pear Upside Down Cake

Ingredients

  • 6 to 8 soft pears, cored and cut into 1/2 inch chunks
  • 2 tablespoons of butter
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 cup lime infused vodka (or your favorite flavor)
  • Ground cinnamon to taste
  • 1 angel food or yellow cake mix, batter made according to recipe (If you prefer, you can make cake batter from scratch, but this is quicker and easier)

In a large cast iron skillet, melt the butter.  Add in the brown sugar and pears, stirring until the brown sugar is completely dissolved.  Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to a simmer.  Add the vodka and cinnamon.  Simmer until mix reduces between by 1/3 to 1/2, stirring occasionally.  If your pan is big enough, pour the cake mix evenly over the top of the fruit sauce.  If not, carefully transfer the fruit sauce to a 13 x 9 inch baking pan, then pour cake batter evenly over the top.

Bake for 30 minutes in a 375 degree oven.  Remove from oven and allow to cool until just warm before serving.  Goes well with whipped cream or ice cream.

Movie Quotes – Day 130

It’s true what they say: Cops and women don’t mix. It’s like eating a spoonful of Drano; sure, it’ll clean you out, but it’ll leave you hollow inside. — The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!

Rule number one, as one of my first leaders in the Army told me, is to not be stupid.  If only I’d listened to that advice.  Rushing into a relationship, especially one that rapidly involves children, is almost as dumb as grabbing something randomly from under the kitchen sink and taking a swig.  If someone is giving you a time limit or making an ultimatum, that’s a good hint that maybe they’re not the one for you.  If it’s worth spending the rest of your life with them, it’s worth taking an extra year or two to make sure.

Musings

  • The arrival area of the Las Vegas airport is a lot nicer than the departure area.  I guess once they have all your money, there isn’t much need to impress you.
  • A pair of noise canceling earphones was worth every penny on the flight home.
  • If you’re giving a lecture on a very technical subject, which includes slides of computer code, do us all a favor and announce that all of that is up on your website before we try to scribble it down or take pictures of it on our phones.
  • Reason number 1312887111991 that I love Irish Woman – She got out of bed to meet me at the airport so that I wouldn’t have to drive home tired.
  • As nice as that king bed with six pillows was in the hotel, sleeping in my own bed and listening to the cats play Australian rules football all night was wonderful.
  • Boo had an ice pack against his forehead when I picked him up from school today.  Apparently he and another boy clonked heads on the playground just before dismissal.  It will tell you how hard I think his head is when I was more worried about the other child.
  • Girlie Bear was promoted to Cadet Master Sergeant and made the NCOIC of her JROTC battalion’s S-4 (Supply) tonight.
    • Next year she gets to learn the difference between being in charge and being responsible for it all.
