Misplacement

Once again, innocent victims have been hurt or killed by someone who should have been stopped before he hurt anyone.  Once again, we mourn the death of people who did not deserve to die.  Once again, we are being blamed for it.

The father of one of the victims of Friday’s shooting in Santa Barbara has placed the blame for the tragedy on the National Rifle Association and others who believe in a citizen’s right to arms and do our part to defend it.  Again, we are hearing calls to further restrict that right.  Again, we are being asked why we need the guns we choose to own, and again we are being called to task for someone else’s actions.

There is a lot of blame to go around in this.  We could blame the police officers, who questioned the murdering scum several weeks ago, but were convinced that he was not a threat to himself or others.  We could blame his counselors and therapists, who did little to remove his  access to firearms after they became concerned about him.  We could blame his parents, who raised their son to be the monster that he turned out to be.

But they, along with the rest of us, should shoulder no blame for all this death and pain.

The only person I blame for the deaths, suffering, and chaos that has erupted is the self-aggrandizing, malevolent, spoiled, evil scum that committed these heinous acts.  No-one put those guns in his hands.  No-one forced his hand when he slid a knife into his roommates.  No-one pushed down on his leg to accelerate his car when he used it as a weapon to hurt the innocent.

No-one, that is, except him.  Reading his screeds and watching his videos, I do not see mental illness.  I see evil.  Calling him a disturbed young person gives him too much credit, and casts a pall on those who truly fit the description.  He was not troubled, or disturbed, or even insane.  He was evil.  He saw himself as better than other human beings, as the decider of life or death for the rest of us, and spewed his hate at those who denied him what he saw as his right:  the bodies and subservience of others.

To his memory, I can only say that the world is a better place without him.  I only regret that he decided to bring harm to the rest of humanity before taking the coward’s way out.

To the parents of those who were hurt or killed on Friday night, you have my sympathy and prayers.  I will not insult you by saying that I understand your grief and anger, because only someone who has had to look upon the corpse of their child can say that, and by the grace of God, I have never had to do that.  I will only ask you to consider that it was not the knife, or the gun, or the BMW that harmed your loved ones.  It was an evil, little man who did it.  His choice of tools to inflict harm are secondary to the manner in which he chose to use them.

To those who were hurt, but have survived, I pray for your healing and for you to find strength in the months and years to come.  You are blameless, and yet you suffer.  I hope that your suffering is short, and that you fully recover from your injuries.

To the parents of the bastard, I say this:  How dare you?  You raised up a spoiled brat who murderously lashed out at the world because he hadn’t gotten laid yet, and you point the finger of blame at me and those like me?  You should be the ones wearing sack cloth and ashes now, not me.  I did not create this monster, you did.  You should be on national television, on your knees, begging the parents and friends of his victims for forgiveness, not directing their ire at anyone but yourself.

To the media and the other vultures that have been drawn to the blood of the innocent in this and other tragedies, I hope that you can find someone to pray for your souls.   It’s obvious that to you no path is too low, too slimy, or too drenched in blood.

To the rest of us, please join me in praying that those who were injured may find healing, that those who mourn may find solace, and that the person who caused all this can find forgiveness in the eyes of the Lord.

Musings

  • This weekend I did a lot of fishing.  No catching, just fishing.
  • There is a distinct difference between explaining the intricacies of an internal combustion engine, a manual transmission, and an electronic ignition and just saying “Push in the clutch before you turn the key” when asked how to start a car.
    • The difference is usually seen in the amount of glassiness in your audience’s eyes when you are done with your explanation.
  • Gentlemen, even if you truly feel that way, never use the term “It was your bright idea, darling.” when your wife complains about how tired she is after working in the flower garden and goldfish pond all day.
  • Discussing the Santa Barbara shooting and the media reaction to it at the dinner table might make the inevitable discussion of it in Girlie Bear’s Social Studies class…. interesting.
    • In the likely event that she gets in trouble for repeating what I have to say on the subject, I pledge to pay for Girlie Bear to have sufficient entertainment during her suspension.
  • When you have nightmares after writing a semi-autobiographical short story, you have cut a little too close to the bone.
  • If you ever want to see how integrated your area is, then take your child to a public place where children play.
    • No matter their race, income, or politics, everyone likes to take their kids to the park on a sunny day.
    • It is gratifying to see the guy wearing the “Obama 2012” tee-shirt talking about where to find appropriate swimwear for a little girl with the lady who had Rush Limbaugh coming out of her car windows when she pulled into the parking area.
  • I am no longer allowed to use the term “self licking ice cream cone” when describing technology, regardless if it’s something that a vendor provides or something that a customer uses.

Movie Quotes – Day 147

We’re up the creek and you want to hock the paddle! Some Like It Hot

An alternate reading of this is “When you find yourself in the hole, quit digging!”.  There comes a point where you have to accept that what you’re doing is wrong and change direction.  When you find yourself arguing with someone and realize that you’ve both reduced your arguments to insults and shouting, it’s time to stop.  When you find yourself using credit cards to pay the interest on your credit cards, it’s time to stop.  When your country finds itself going deep into debt so that those who do not wish to work or are “too big to fail” do not have to deal with the harsh realities of life and their own decisions, then it’s time to stop.  When you find yourself voting for a candidate because of the party they belong to, regardless of what they actually do and say, then it’s time to stop.

Movie Quotes – Day 146

You can tell her that when you found me, I was with the only brothers I had left. And that there was no way I was deserting them. I think she’d understand that.  — Saving Private Ryan

Today we pause to remember the men and women who have given the last full measure of themselves on our behalf.  We renew our vow to forever remember and honor them, and to care for their families in their absence.

Thousands of Americans have given their lives to defend our country and our freedoms.  We owe it to them to act as if we deserved their sacrifice.

I ask that sometime today, while you enjoy the life that has been safeguarded by our men and women in uniform, you take a moment to remember them and to thank them for what they have earned for us.

Movie Quotes – Day 145

To a New Yorker like you, a hero is some type of weird sandwich, not some nut who takes on three Tigers. — Kelly’s Heroes

The word hero gets thrown around a lot lately, and sometimes it’s even used correctly.  Someone can be a hero for the things they do in the military, or as a police officer or firefighter.  A hero can be a teacher that never gives up on the kids that everyone else has written off.  It can be the doctor who uses her education and skills to take care of patients in a charity hospital when it would be easy to work office hours in a practice.

To me, a hero is someone who willingly sacrifices for the betterment of others.  It’s something that should be common in our society, but until it is, whose who do it without being asked or even thinking about it need to be recognized.

Movie Quotes – Day 144

Mr. Harley: Your impatience is quite understandable.
Klaatu: I’m impatient with stupidity. My people have learned to live without it.
Mr. Harley: I’m afraid my people haven’t. I’m very sorry… I wish it were otherwise.

The Day The Earth Stood Still

If you don’t find a way to work around stupid, you’re not going to get very far.  And remember, there’s a difference between ignorant and stupid.  Ignorant means that someone has not learned about something or is incapable of learning.  Stupid is a willful state of mind.  Stupid means that they either know better and still choose to be stupid. Stupid refuses to learn from others or even from their own mistakes.

Someone who doesn’t know how to balance a checkbook at 19 is probably ignorant.  Someone who can’t do it by the time they turn 30 is stupid.  Someone who muzzles themselves on their first range trip is ignorant, and requires gentle reminding and training.  Someone who muzzles others after years in the shooting sports and argues with those who seek to correct them is stupid, and needs to be stopped before they hurt someone.

Stupid should be anticipated and factored into plans.  Stupid can be countered and walled off, but it can never be eliminated.  The sooner you realize this and live accordingly, the easier, and less stressful, life will be.

A Response

Earlier today, Alison Lundergan Grimes, the Democrat candidate for Senator in Kentucky, released an open letter to the 40% of Republicans in the Commonwealth who voted against Senator Mitch McConnell in this week’s primary election.  In it, she expressed the following items as places where she has common views with those of us who aren’t in her party but are sick and tired of the status quo:

I, too, believe Washington, D.C. is not working for Kentucky.

I, too, believe that the federal government should help or get out of the way.

I, too, want Republicans and Democrats to work together to cut spending and to help Kentucky businesses create jobs.

I, too, believe we should close the tax loopholes that encourage big corporations to ship our good-paying Kentucky jobs overseas.

I, too, believe that we should balance the budget, protect our veterans, and work to leave the next generation a better country than the one given to us.

She asked us to keep an open mind, learn about her positions, and then make our own decision as to whether or not to support her election bid.

So, in the interests of finding common ground, here are the things I need Mrs. Grimes to do in order to get behind her campaign:

  1. Publicly repudiate President Obama’s efforts to circumvent the Constitution by governing through executive fiat and changing what the law means and requires without Congressional action.
  2. Fully support repeal of the Affordable Care Act.  I’m willing to discuss replacement of the act once it’s gone, but first it must go.
  3. A commitment to fully and impartially investigate the misuse of our countries intelligence organs to indiscriminately and unconstitutionally gather data on the communications and lives of law-abiding citizens without a warrant.
  4. A public affirmation that the Constitution is the highest law of the land, that it is a limiting document on the government and not the people, and that she will block any legislation that seeks to abridge the rights guaranteed by the Constitution.
    • This should come with a commitment to block the nomination of any person who does not demonstrably support this position.
  5. A commitment to work to balance the budget by cutting the fat out of entitlements and government waste, not by raising taxes on those of us who bother to roll out of bed in the morning, put on our game face, and work to keep the wheels on.
  6. A commitment to only seek reelection once.

If I can get these things from Mrs. Grimes, we’ll discuss whether or not I’ll consider voting for her.  Until then, all I can do is wish her luck and ask her to look elsewhere for support.
