Thoughts on the Day

  • I seriously regret not having coffee this morning.
  • You know, for a while today I thought I was The Man.  During a meeting, everyone was looking to me for answers, watching me while I talked, and paying attention to what I had to say.  I thought I had them eating out of my hand.  Then I noticed I had my shirt on inside out.
  • There is a lot of satisfaction in successfully getting through a task that should take 8 hours in 3.
  • Remember a few weeks ago when I gave out candy at the zoo’s Halloween party?  Tonight we took Boo.  I tried hard to not twitch as we passed the Space Disco.
  • If you’re old enough to look down the dress of the young lady dressed up as a mermaid at the undersea adventure part of the Halloween trail, you’re probably too old to trick or treat.
  • Taking two four year old boys to the zoo for trick-or-treating is an excellent workout.
  • I’m not sure what was going on in Louisville 10 months ago, but there was a thick crop of newborn babies accompanying their older siblings tonight.
  • The little grizzly cubs at the zoo aren’t exactly little anymore.  One of them is approximately the size of a VW Beetle.
  • As much as I don’t like stealthy police cruisers, there is some joy in watching the #!@#$!@ who cut me off and sped up the shoulder pass up the nice policeman in the nondescript gray car, who was kind enough to take time out of his evening to invite the young man over to the side of the road to make sure he was OK.
  • If the weather’s nice this weekend, I’ll be finishing up the footers on Irish Woman’s porch extension and beginning digging out under where I want to build my wood rick.  If the weather isn’t so nice, I’m going to the range.  I’ll zero rifles and practice between lighting bolts if I have to.
  • The big brown truck of happiness brought me some of the parts for my AR build yesterday, along with a box full of 20 round PMAGS.  Soon the time of assemblage will begin.

President Obama says that “creating jobs is not rocket science”.  Of course it’s not.  He has people in the government who know how to create rockets.  Jobs?  Well, not so much.

Thoughts on the Weekend

  • Some may frown in my decision that Irish Woman should be the one to dig the footers for the extension to the side porch that we will be building over the next few weeks, but it was her idea in the first place.  I see having skin in the game as being a limiting factor on her ambitions and overestimation of my skills and budget.
  • When I die and get to heaven, assuming that the Lord is forgiving to the point of amnesia, the smell I expect to greet me once Saint Peter stops laughing and opens the Pearly Gates is onions frying in bacon grease.
  • I thought we were done with tomatoes; I was mistaken.  When Irish Woman and Girlie Bear tore out the tomato plants last weekend, they found half a bushel or so of green and ripening love apples, mostly pretty little Roma’s.  Our neighbor had the same situation and gave them all to us.  I just put back 9 more quarts of chili base, and a similar amount of marinara sauce will be forthcoming after they redden up in the kitchen.  Waste not, want not.
  • Giving a four year old boy a haircut should not exhaust me as much as a good workout, but it does.
    • It’s getting easier, but easier is not equivalent to easy
  • Pro-tip – Before going over to the neighbor’s house to apologize for the caterwauling that occurred while you were giving your son a haircut, put on a cover garment.  I’m not sure where they stand on open carry, but tonight wasn’t the right time to figure it out.
  • The AR-15 project is starting to take shape.  My lower from York Arms should be here any day, as should be the lower parts kit, stripped upper, and upper parts kit from Palmetto State Armory.  Next comes the barrel, gas system, bolt and bolt carrier group, handguards, and sighting system.  I’m thinking of making a varminter, so I may be looking for hand guards and a gas system for a 20 inch flat top rifle.
    • I’ve also stocked up on evil standard capacity magazines.
  • I hope tomatoes, peppers, and green beans like growing in mulched up maple leaves, because that’s what got put into the garden beds today.

Lessons From Last Night’s Dream

  • I haven’t dreamt in Russian for a long time.  It was kind of nice.
  • When the time traveller is sitting on Alvarado Street and reading tea leaves, you should listen to him.
  • It did indeed prove to be impossible to ride my mountain bike from Monterey to Okinawa, but I had a really good time trying.
  • After last night, I have to agree with LabRat in that we should have tuna safe dolphin, instead of the reverse.
  • I really need to get to the range more.  Of course, the range in my dream was on a beach, which is another place I need to get to more often.
  • I really need to get better so I stop taking NyQuil right before bedtime.
