Movie Quotes – Day 308

Well, I, uh, don’t think it’s quite fair to condemn a whole program because of a single slip-up, sir. — Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb

It’s go, time, citizens.  If the incumbent on your ballot has shown that they don’t trust you to act like an adult, then it’s time to show them the door.  If they support your beliefs, then reward them with your vote.  If a ballot initiative will increase government in any way, I ask that you vote against it.  If it increases the scope of your rights, then I ask that you vote for it.  In other words, if the people who want your vote have betrayed you, or if someone wants to increase oppressive government, then vote accordingly

If you are a registered voter and haven’t been out to the polls yet, get off your butt and do it.  You still have time to get your sample ballot, do a little research, and make your vote.  Is your vote going to make as much impact as a snowball rolling downhill?  Probably not.  But you get enough snow going down the mountain, and it will sweep away anything that stands against it.

If for no other reason than you can look yourself in the mirror and say “I did what I could”, please go out and vote.

Today’s Earworm

I took today off from work and got a bunch of stuff done in the yard and the garden.  I’m sore, bruised in a couple of places, and tired.  In a few minutes, I’m going to find out if that high-speed, low-drag knife I bought in Indy is any good at digging out splinters.

But you know what?  I feel great and it’s been a good day.  Unlike work in IT, when you bust your ass in the physical world, you can actually see your progress.

Movie Quotes – Day 307

If I woke up tomorrow with my head sewn to the carpet, I wouldn’t be more surprised than I am now. — Christmas Vacation

Life is going to throw you curve balls.  You can train and prepare all you want, but every so often something is going to come along that surprises you.  You can let that roll over you, or you can adapt and use them.

Thought for the Day

America is a country which produces citizens who will cross the ocean to fight for democracy but won’t cross the street to vote. — From an email from OldNFO

Musings

  • I discovered this weekend that Irish Woman likes top shelf bourbon. I mean really top shelf bourbon. Like “A bottle of this stuff costs more than your average car payment” top shelf bourbon.
  • The more bourbon Irish Woman sips, the more southern and Irish she becomes.
  • According to marketing video at the distillery this weekend, the history of bourbon whiskey pretty much got started when a bunch of Scottish and Irish immigrants looked at the federal government and said “Screw you, I’m going west and making whiskey!”. And so, a great American tradition was born.
  • The bed and breakfast we stayed at is a working farm.  We need to go back so I can get pictures of Irish Woman milking a goat and negotiating with a chicken about possession of her eggs.
  • The farm apparently has an abundance of roosters.  There’s nothing like hearing them compete for dominance while you’re trying to sleep in.
  • It’s not a compliment when I take two sips of the coffee I bought from you, then throw the rest in the trash can on my way out of your cafe.
  • You know, I don’t see the point of putting Barbie dolls from 2004 in an antique store.
  • After we got home this afternoon, we took Boo out in the yard to practice with his bow.  Once he learns to not stick his head between the bow and the bow string in order to aim, he’s going to be deadly.
  • Sign of a good waiter – when a customer orders a dish that includes a whole fish, head, tail, and everything, he cautions the customer and even brings out the fish to prove his point.
    • Little Bear changed his mind and ordered shrimp instead.

Movie Quotes – Day 306

They say a man who represents himself has a fool for a client. Well, with God as my witness, I am that fool! — The Addams Family

There should come a time when you look at a project and say “This I cannot do myself.”.  There’s a reason that the term “WECSOG” exists.  Knowing what you can do well, and what you really ought to pay someone else to do, is an important step toward success.

I really wish I had learned that lesson several years and several thousand dollars in building supplies earlier than I did.

Overheard in the Truck

Lady doing a lecture about British history:  Over the next few sessions, we will discuss how the Anglo-Saxons replaced the Celtic inhabitants of Great Britain.

Me:  Burn the village to the ground, doo dah, doo dah.

Girlie Bear:  Spread the fire all around, all the doo dah day!

Movie Quotes – Day 305

You still think it’s beautiful to die for your country. The first bombardment taught us better. When it comes to dying for country, it’s better not to die at all. — All Quiet on the Western Front

The tiny portion of our fellow citizens who stand up to defend home and hearth reflects a noble minority who are willing to walk away from comfort and easy living so that others might be safe.  All that they ask is that their lives be spent only on things that matter, and that they never be taken for granted.

We honor our dead.  We remember not only how they died, but also how they lived. We owe it to them to make sure that their sacrifices are few and are never in vain.

Musings

  • Chewing gum while you are on the phone with another person ought to be a hanging offense.
  • Note to self:  I am not allowed to put the phrase “I laughed, I cried, I came away a better human being” into my weekly status report.
  • We had precisely one trick-or-treater tonight.  Did I mention that due to our annual tradition of not coordinating who was going to buy the candy, we’re up to our eyeballs in sweets?
  • Note to self – When the wife says that she wants to go to a specific place for your anniversary, it is a good idea to remember to make the necessary reservations.
  • Irish Woman shows she loves me by cooking food that will eventually lead to my death.  I show her love by building roaring fires in the fireplace so that she may warm herself like a turkey on a rotisserie.

Movie Quotes – Day 304

Listen to them: the children of the night. What sweet music they make. — Dracula

Why are we fascinated by the macabre?  Movie monsters, sparkly vampires, and zombies, not to mention just plain old slashers and boogiemen, make up a huge percentage of our entertainment.  Our legends and fairy tales include tales of murder, cannibalism, and unspeakable evil.  What causes us to stare so long into this abyss?

Me?  I just do it to meet friends and family. I love each and every one of you ghoulish, slime-dripping, raving lunatics.
