If you’re a believer, there are two things you have to do to atone for any transgression.  First, you must come to grips with what you have done and how it impacts your relationship with $DIETY.  Next, you have to admit your error and make amends with the people you have harmed.  Without the first, the second will do little to assuage your inner guilt.  Without the second, the first is hollow and superficial.  Yes, God forgives, but you must also ask the forgiveness of your brothers and sisters, and you must face the music in both the physical and spiritual worlds.
