Thoughts on the Day

  • Today was one of those days where I needed someone to stop me from cutting the blue wire.
    • “Cut the blue wire that reaches from the detonator to the blasting cap” snip, turn page “after removing the batteries from the circuit.”
  • We may have to clear out the frogs in the big pond.  One of them has tasted human flesh.
    • Irish Woman is fine, but she apparently screamed like a school girl when that thing bit her while she was cleaning out the pump and filter.
  • I took the stuff for the CARE package over to my friend’s house for packing and shipping.  She is so thrilled and wanted me to thank everyone who contributed.  I’ll be posting pics once she’s got it all boxed up.
  • Not sure what’s going on down the street, but one of my neighbors is either shooting .22’s at night or they’re using up some fireworks.
    • Nope, it’s fireworks.  Yet another reason to move where the nearest human being is miles away.
  • It’s a beautiful evening here tonight.  Nothing beats sitting in your living room, windows open, gentle breeze from the ceiling fan, and listening to millions of tree frogs try to find a mate.

I can honestly say that I have never been bitten by a frog.

Moons ago, our TV decided to give up the ghost. The picture suddenly degraded to several running vertical lines that pinched in toward the center of the screen (the sound worked perfectly, though). The previous Christmas (either our first or second after our wedding), my dad had gifted my husband with the Reader’s Digest everything-home-repairs book, which I’d seen Dad use multiple times while growing up. Hubby promptly fetched said tome and turned to the pages on TV repair. As it would happen, the first page of instructions happened to be on the right side of the spread. He dutifully read through the first page, then turned to the unplugged and opened-up TV…and touched the ground for the picture tube.

Do you know how many volts a picture tube retains even after it’s unplugged? Especially a 26″ picture tube?

Hubby shot backwards across the room, shaking, his hand twitching and soot marks on his fingers. When he stopped trembling, he went back to the book. *turn page* Oh, look, a warning box! Do not touch the ground for the picture tube, as even an unplugged set contains anywhere from 10k-25k (or more) volts, and touching the ground will discharge the accumulated voltage into your body in a nasty (but quick) jolt.

“Why didn’t they put that on the first page?!”

I think the fact that he’s such a big guy helped it not be so severe. Watching him dance across the room like an unhinged marionette was both hilarious and terrifying. However, he’s not done that ever again. 😀

He learned something that night that he will never forget, and will never be in doubt.
