30 Days of Tolkien – Day 25

No language is justly studied merely as an aid to other purposes. It will in fact better serve other purposes, philological or historical, when it is studied for love, for itself.

My Take – Learn because you enjoy the subject, and it will be more useful than anything you studied because you had to. Even in situations that seem totally unrelated, the skills you earn will apply.

I’ve seen too many people approach a study subject with a bias already in mind and they learn just enough to prove that bias.

I became a 2nd Amendment advocate because I wanted to learn the history of it, the moral, philosophical, and ethical aspects of it. Out of that study; I came to support the pro-right view.

A person who loves a subject will be willing to admit the good and the bad of it, will be willing to let others appreciate it or not. Contrast that approach with some of the anti-rights cultists and you’ll readily see what I mean.
