30 Days of the Founding Fathers – Day 1

I say, the earth belongs to each of these generations during its course, fully and in its own right. The second generation receives it clear of the debts and incumbrances of the first, the third of the second, and so on. For if the first could charge it with a debt, then the earth would belong to the dead and not to the living generation. Then, no generation can contract debts greater than may be paid during the course of its own existence. — Thomas Jefferson

My Take – We are yoking our children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren to massive debt. We have been financing day to day operations of the government with worthless paper for so long, we don’t know where to begin when we talk about starting to cut back and get a handle on this crushing burden. If we don’t do something 10 years ago, we are going to weigh down future generations to the point where their standard of living and ability to remain a free nation will be gone.

And to be honest, I don’t think the politicians from any party have the courage to look the American people in the face and tell them the party is over and that we have to all cut back in order to survive. The choice now seems to be either, as Roberta X. puts it, auguring in or a graceful slump into oblivion.

Well said, and I think we’re starting to circle the drain… dammit!
