The War – Episode 17

The following is a transcript of the president’s address to the nation on the evening of December 19.

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen.

When we woke up this morning, we all celebrated the beginning of the holiday season.  Children prepared for their winter break, while parents and grandparents looked forward to the hectic days leading up to Christmas.

Those dreams were shattered by a group of cowards, who attacked not our military or our government, but instead murdered our citizens as they went about their business. Innocent people were snatched from the streets and murdered while the world watched. Schools, businesses, and our very homes have been threatened.

Tonight, armed gunmen continue to attack Tucson, Arizona, and I have declared martial law there. Federal troops and resources are being sent to help the brave men and women of Tucson, and the governor there has already called up the National Guard to deal with the problem.

Make no mistake, we will apprehend the killers who have shattered our peace and tranquility and they will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.  They can either surrender peacefully or be hunted down.

There is much to mourn today, but let me be clear: we will go on. Our nation has been stung, but we are unbowed and we are still strong. Nothing can change that. The President-Elect and I are in agreement on this:  America will not be frightened by these cowardly acts.

I have signed executive orders today activating our emergency response plans, and the President-Elect has pledged to renew them after the inauguration. All military leaves are cancelled, and all reservists are asked to report to their units as soon as possible. I have spoken with the governors of the various states, and they have pledged to coordinate their efforts with the federal government.

Your government is taking every step necessary to safeguard your lives, and we ask that you have patience and cooperate with local, state, and federal officials in this time of crisis.

To those who carried out these heinous attacks, those who supported them, and those who planned all of this, we will find you. There is no safe corner of the globe for you, and no matter how long it takes, we will root you out and bring you to justice.

In closing, I ask that everyone within the sound of my voice join me, the President-Elect, and our families in praying for those who lost loved ones today, for the men and women who safeguard our freedoms, and for the United States of America.

Thank you, and good night.
