Musings

  • Irish Woman spent months planning this kitchen re-do.  She did an awesome job.  The cabinets are all up, and they are usually within an inch or so of where she planned for them to go.
    • What she failed to plan for, unfortunately, is the fact that I have no idea what I’m doing.  In fact, I well and truly suck at this.
  • Putting down cement tile backer board isn’t as much fun as having the first few layers of skin peeled back on my thighs with a rusty can opener, but it’s a close second.
  • We’ve had several swings between warm and cold in the past few weeks, and we’ve been lighting up kerosene heaters and charcoal grills at night to keep our fruit trees from getting frost or freezing.  By my estimation, we will surpass the cost of just buying organic fruit this weekend.
  • Girlie Bear has been getting some static from her university when it comes to getting access to their system to register for orientation and such.  Today, she tried again, and was put off by the staff.  She then cast “Summon Pissed Off Step-Mom”, rolled a natural 20, and now has access to the university system to register for orientation.
    • It was awesome to see.  There was the “Head Shake” combat style, the “Overly Polite Southern Woman” approach, and a whole bunch of other bad things I was glad weren’t directed at me.

  1. You have the seeds for at least two if not three stories for the Minivandian tales right here in this post.

We have been in this house for 31 years and orchard we planted, three or four peach trees and maybe eight trellised dwarf apple trees has been gone for years.
The peach trees were the first to go, every bug in the area made a straight line for our trees, and the squirrels would eat through the peach to get to the pit.
The apples succumbed to a variety of scab and other problems.
Even with the help of a friend who is a professional farmer and has his own peach and apple trees, we were not successful.
The replacements are red raspberries, blueberries, and strawberries.
The raspberries grow like weeds, and we harvest enough for jams, jellies, and an awesome red raspberry pancake syrup.
Freeze blueberries for jam or for pancakes or muffins.
We grow the strawberries in a soil less container system, and we do not have to bend over to pick them.
We freeze most of what we pick, and do our canning and jam making when it is colder.
After I post this, I am going to head out to the kitchen, put two slices of frozen store bought cinnamon bread in the waffle maker and then the agonizing decision of what jam to use.

    • That sounds awesome. We’ve had good luck with the peaches and cherries, and the apples are starting to produce. Our raspberries and blackberries do very well, but very little of the fruit survives foraging by Boo and the next door neighbor boys. Our strawberries also do well, but are a salad bar for the boys.

Forgot to add, we have never needed to spray the berries, and thus we can garden graze.
